The collaboration began with the participants’ individual interpretations of the phrase, which appears in the 1859 charter of the Cooper Union as the school’s motto.
The phrase was written into the charter as the official motto to appear on the seal of the school. The phrase was also used during the seventh commencement address in which Rosalind H. Palmer, one of the graduating students, who used it regarding the ideals of the school.
